This project is going to be an amazing way to explore a subject I have had little exposure to. My final images will be forward thinking combining inspiration from a variety of different sources. To begin my visual research I am going to look at tradition tribes from around the world as well as modern interpretation of body modification and the different ideals of beauty.

PADDY HEARTLY
I love the diversity of the way Paddy Heartly works. Although the mask like accessories distort the face considerably i believe the style and over all design to be striking and beautiful. During this project I feel it is important for me to look beyond the surface of the imagery I am looking at. Body modification can sometimes be quite shocking at first, but often it is seen as beautiful in the eye of the beholder. When someone uses body modification it is often for aesthetic or narrative reasons. This is important to consider as a makeup designer, that makeup can be used in the way of visual communication.
The image below is one of my favorite pieces by Heartly. It is innovative and powerful. Using an acrylic mask he has distorted the facial features to create an animalesque being. The mask is so close to his skin it almost merges in, becoming part of his face. This pushes the boundaries of beauty, completely distorting his facial features, yet the image is still utterly captivating and portrays body modification in an experimental way.
