EDITORIAL FASHION

Mood Board
I am planning to incorporate more advance SFX into my look for editorial fashion, as on a shoot like this the artist would be allowed more time in order to create a dynamic and detailed look. The look would also only have to be applied to one model rather than a whole catwalk of models. This allows the designer to focus specifically on creating one look for camera.

CONCEPT
I really want this look to have a futuristic alien feel to it. I will create the alienesque look using a bald cap to completely cover the hair. I will then build up texture and depth using gelatin. Currently so many people desire to have darken skin than what they naturally have. My concept will be that in the future people will have to redesire to be as pale as possible. I want to add a luminosity to the skin using silver liquid metal and beguile pigment which reflects the light beautifully.

Hair Sketch Ideas

My project is coming to an end and its about time I got some strong designs down! I am still finding it hard to think of how I can incorporate SFX within a high fashion look, without making it look to science fiction. I have practiced the application of a bald cap a few times during this project and I feel this should be used to my advantage when shooting. The model I have chosen for my fist 'Brave New World' image is a girl currently living in Winchester who originates from the middle east. Her hair is incredibly think and long and I still want to show some of this within the image.
Using half a bald cap I will cover half her head leaving the rest of her hair falling out of the back, I want it to appear as if in the future ladies would shave the front of their hair line in order to lay defined patterns over the top (using the rest of their hair). Plaiting pieces of crepe hair I will create a design on top of the cap. I will then use wire to create a structured piece across and upwards.

HAIR PIECE EXPERIMENT
The night before my shoot I decided to experiment and see if I could make a head piece like in my design, after struggling for a long time to finalize my design I did not have enough time to create one to the standard I would have like. After spending hours fiddling around with extensions, wire and a glue gun I decided it just wasn't going to work. If I had more time to develop this project I would have focused more on making different hair pieces and this is something I want to experiment further in the future.

Initial idea 2
(CHOSEN DESIGN FOR LOOK 1)

I feel this design will look classic and not to over complicated. Using a combination of a half bald cap, fullers earth, gelatin and gold leaf I will create a fashion focused look suitable to be produced for a catwalk show. Makeup and hair for the catwalk needs to be simple yet still create a strong impact.
Gold has been a key theme through out the development of this project and using gold leaf will add a sense of luxury and  expense to the look.

CONCEPT
In the future we may take body adornment to a new level. Coating our skin in real gold to enhance beauty and illustrate our wealth and power.

STYLING
Styling is a key element within this fashion catwalk focused image. I had picked out a variety of different statement jewelry to layer up onto the model. I feel this will really extenuate the gold within the SFX makeup look I produce, tying the whole tribal theme together. The necklace have an authentic feel to them with a modern twist.

Keiron LeVine
Accessories

A few days before our project was coming to an end we had another very exciting visit for artist Keiron LeVine. This time we had the opportunity to see more of his own work. After seeing all his research and images from his travels around the world it was inspiration to see the pieces he has made using items he had collected and I got a real sense of the creative journey he takes to produce these beautiful accessories.
Unfortunately I was unable to get a model to come in during the lesson he was with us all I was still able to inspiration and ideas from the things he brought in.

SFX DRAWING

Drawing is a key part to my design process. I feel that drawing an image helps me to incorporate a few different ideas grasped from other image that I use as inspiration. If I had more time I would have loved to makeup a full head prosthetic to completely alter the shape and size of the head.  Some tribes used to believe that a large head was a sign of beauty and knowledge. The more important somebody was the larger their head would be. From a young age they would wrap their skull in order to create an elongated shape. Skull binding is now band, although tribes still recreate the illusion of a larger head used elaborate hair styles.

This drawing combines inspiration from skull binding and a futuristic feel. The smooth texture could be created using latex sheets, built up around the head. Using a bald cap underneath would give the illusion of a completely hair free head. This would allow the prosthetic piece to look more authentic.

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
EXPERIMENTATION

After playing around with a variety of different molding techniques I wanted to experiment with creating free hand gelatin dots. This dots were then applied onto a mask I had brought from a craft shop. After sticking the gelatin dots onto the mask I then used a gold spray to produce a golden tribal theme mask. Simple and effective!
Our third SFX session allowed us to experiment further with the use of different prosthetics and we started to create our basic pieces to apply onto the face and body using the methods taught in the 2 previous weeks. I felt this was a good way to test the different materials and see what sort of products work well together. I brought a few different things into the lesson which I thought would make nice prosthetic pieces. When using something as a mold it is essential to coat the mold in Vaseline in order to be able to take the prosthetic out of mold cleanly.
Using a piece of wooden train track a wanted to create a graphic shape that could be applied between the eye brows, although wood was not a great material to use as a mold as the gelatin was very weak and tore as I tried to take it from the mold. I also found the gelatin to be very stick and the shape I made was really fiddly. By as I tried to stick it to the face it had started to melt in my hands and completely tore apart.
Although I again used gelatin in silicone cake molds, this was perfect and I was able to pop the prosthetic straight out once it was dry. Applying powder helped the prosthetic to be handled more without melting.
During our first practical session for the project ‘Brave New World’ we were introduced to creating texture on the skin using a variety of different materials such as fullers earth, gelatine and latex. It was a good way to experiment freely with how different products can be used on the skin to create different effects.
In the session I added beads and pulses to create a textured pattern. I then applied gold spray and glitter on top. Latex can also be made into prosthetic pieces and then added to the body once dry.
Fullers earth is used as a base for most face masks and comes in the form of a powder. When mixed with water it creates a paste like substance that can be applied onto the skin and hair safely. Once dry it becomes cracked and flaky. Building layers up can create a really interesting texture to the skin.
Wax is one of the most pliable products to use within SFX and is quite easy to use in order to build texture and shape directly onto the skin.  Using a palette knife warm some of the product up onto your hand, this allows the product to be easily manipulated. Build up onto chosen area and blend into natural skin using spirit gum remover. Colour can be added to create more of a realistic effect and sealer can be used to set product.

Tuplast is a plastic specially used to create realistic scars and skin textures. After Tuplast has completely dried, scars and other skin anomalies created with it are waterproof. They can be removed by being simply pulled off. After I pulled the tuplast off it left a really textured effect on the skin that looked like real scaring.

TRADITIONAL TRIBAL INFLUENCE

Although I want to create imagery focused towards to future I feel sometimes I am loosing the tribal influence within my ideas. Creating this quick chalk pastel drawing I have produced a simple tribal look which can be used to develop into a more futuristic look.
To create this look I would use a bald cap over the head completely covering all the hair. I also want to focus more on styling within my imagery as I feel accessories can really helped to illustrate a look and theme.

Snow White
During this project I has found it hard to find an original and unique twist on the standard tribal theme. I want to incorporate something different within my images, I am yet to put my finger on what that actually is yet. Although, whilst trolling through hundreds of images on various sites I've found a concept that is a little different to the rest. I love the 'white' take on a tribal theme. Taking traditional tribal elements the designers of the imagery below have incorporated a modern edge. I feel the white used creates a futuristic feel without becoming to high tech and metallic (which I think a lot of 'futuristic ideals come down to). There is still evidence of tribalism through the use of pattern and texture, the white adds an extra dynamic you don't get with more traditionally correct interpretations.
The image below is absolutely stunning. We would never expect huge bushy eye brows to be so beautiful, but the texture and colour of the hairs against the bold shape around the jaw works really well together and she looks as if she could be a part of a new age modern tribe - could this use of heavy untamed brows be the future? Is this part of the brave the world?
The contrast between the dark skin and bright white patterning across the skin in this image is completely captivating. Using bold shapes and lines is simplistic yet extremely effective. Some times I think I try to think to deeply about my designs, but this use of makeup has inspired me to create some more simple designs, without complicating the entire look.

Metallic Skin
futuristic face
This imagery is a perfect contrast of traditional religious elements and modern interpretation. Using a metallic shade on the skin gives the model a statuesque feel to it. Unlike when I was using gold leaf on the skin, using a liquid product the coloration becomes more a part of the skin rather than something on top. Although I did like the rough texture of gold leaf, I feel this image is stunning because the viewer sees the woman as almost a silver goddess. The blending is seamless and the accessories and styling completely bring this image together.

FULLERS EARTH

Fullers earth is a beautiful product to work with on the skin and hair. It can be easily mixed with colors when wet or applied on top of color on the skin. When it dries you can manipulate it to appear cracked and texture. This is a really interesting way to create depth to the skin adding an extra dimension.

More Painting!
I love experimenting with color and drawing designs helps me to develop my idea and be more creative with the designs I make. Using wire or a hair rat I could sculpture the hair into a strong structure, emulating skull binding to create an elongated head shape. This could then be covered in fullers earth adding texture as well as powder color to add a dynamic element to the look.

BRONZE CAP

I wanted to develop the skill of applying a bad cap further by experimenting with the application of copper leaf across the bald cap and around the face. Originally I wanted to create a helmet shape illusion across the skin. Although I soon discovered it was incredibly difficult to produce a detailed looked using cooper leaf as it was very fragile and hard to manipulate. I really like the idea of people in the future using precious metals to adorn their bodies and skin, almost like makeup but in a super high end way.
